This could be your journey of a lifetime, four leisurely weeks to explore some of the most enchanting mountain scenery on earth in a large loop from Calgary. The route takes in a cluster of outstanding National Parks straddling the Continental Divide in British Columbia, Alberta and Montana – Jasper, Banff, Yoho, Kootenay and Waterton-Glacier International Peace Parks. Also included are the Kootenays, a favourite for those in the know, with lovely small towns, sapphire lakes and deliciously warm hot springs, and Wells Gray Park, with sensational 450 ft. Helmcken Falls. Icefields Parkway, Alberta, and Going-to-the-Sun, Montana, are two of the greatest drives you’ll ever experience, with enough trails to last a lifetime, meadows of blazing wildflowers which usually peak in July, and mountain goats, bighorn sheep and grizzlies. The first drive is a sinuous, 144-mile, north-south ribbon over mountain passes between Jasper and Lake Louise, skirting Columbia Icefield’s seemingly-endless sea of solid ice; the second is a 52-mile east-west route through the middle of Glacier Park, climbing Logan Pass at 6,646 ft., in a series of don’t-look-down switchbacks and harpins. You can opt for self-catering accommodation for this holiday, so you can please yourself and make picnics for walks along some of the finest trails in the world. On the other hand, there ‘s a mix of B&B inns, hot springs resorts and mountain lodges to tempt you.
