From the Twin Cities, renowned for shopping, head north to the state’s Lake District and Grand Rapids. Although dominated by Lake Superior, the largest of the Great Lakes, there are over 1,600 other lakes in this region. Head east to the shores of Lake Superior past the great inland port of Duluth through Amnicon Falls State Park and on to Bayfield. Follow the Lake along to Michigan’s picturesque Keneenaw Peninsula and on to Marquette with its historic downtown. From the shores of Lake Superior cross to Lake Michigan and Door County peninsula. Head west to the Mississippi via Madison and nearby Spring Green with Frank Lloyd Wrights home. Follow the Mississippi up stream from La Crosse back to Minneapolis. |
Lake Michigan is the world’s sixth largest lake, with 1400 miles of shoreline. Starting from Chicago, drive east through Illinois and Indiana to Nappanee and then up to The American Riviera which boasts more white sand beaches than Hawaii, and lakeside towns such as South Haven with enough cafés and galleries to keep you busy for an entire summer. To the north lie the 480ft bluffs of Sleeping Bear Dunes, and beyond, Mackinac Island in its time-warp. On to Door County and your inn by Sturgeon Bay. Head south to that classic American city, Chicago. Shop on fashionable Michigan Avenue, ride to the top of Sears Tower, and hear the sounds of some of the best blues artists in Blues Chicago. |
