There are several routes between Vancouver and the Canadian Rockies. We cater for them all, tailoring itineraries for individual travellers. This route is outstanding. It features spectacular Highway 3 ‘Crowsnest Highway’ a winding route along the mountainous southern border of British Columbia. In Manning Park, the highway is confined by rugged topography and jagged peaks, traversing canyons with perpendicular mountainsides, and lush, green valleys with waterfalls. It passes close to Sumallo Grove with beautiful, stately trees, flowers and rhododendrons. Farther on, the road follows the Similkameen River, climbs to dizzy heights with views of the peaks in Cathedral Park, and descends to the desert near Osoyoos. It explores The Okanagan, Canada’s bountiful fruit- and wine-producing region, and hugs the shore of Lake Okanagan, a California-style resort area with power boats and swimming beaches. Having explored the area round Revelstoke, with its compact park and massive dam, you’ll turn south to the Kootenays, driving for miles along the shore of Upper Arrow Lake, and crossing by (free) ferry from Shelter Bay to Galena Bay on your way to Nelson, and also from Balfour to Kootenay Bay, if you choose to stay in Crawford Bay. The pace of this holiday is deliberately slow so you can walk the trails, explore the Silvery Slocan Heritage Trail linking some of the oldest and most picturesque small towns in British Columbia, and the ghost towns of Sandon, Kootenay and Slocan Lakes. Drive the road up to Idaho Peak Lookout with is vast flower meadows and terrific views over the Kootenays, enjoy the numerous craft shops and galleries the region has to offer, and soak in the hot springs at Ainsworth, Nakusp, Fairmont and Radium. The comforts of the delightful B&B Inns add a special dimension to this favourite holiday.
